Cities as a lens to the world
Case study enquiry frameworks A & B
A group of teachers developed an enquiry framework based upon the SACN framework that might enable students to begin investigating a city of their choosing.
Devising the framework raised considerable debate about language and accessibility. Some teachers felt it was useful to include a brief definition of each section of the framework (version A), but others preferred to leave this out (version B).
The questions we have listed under each section are just ideas and were also the subject of much discussion. You might want to come up with your own, or just explore one in more detail.
Version A
- How is the city helping to develop the local economy?
- How does the city help with the essential costs of living (transport, housing, water, food, energy etc)?
- How does the city help people to enjoy the benefits of city life?
|
- How is the city providing a safe and healthy environment for everyone?
- How does the city respect diversity and build a sense of community?
- How does the city ensure the human rights of its residents?
|
How is _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ helping to build… |
- How is the city managed (Mayor, council structure, community groups, participation etc)?
- How are the needs and ideas of residents included in decision making?
- How is the city planning for the future?
|
- How is the city meeting its energy needs?
- How sustainable are the transport choices in the city?
- How is the city promoting sustainable waste management?
|
