Teaching and learning about the Slave Trade

Tide~ recommends some useful resources and starting points

2007 was the bi-centenary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.  This anniversary became a starting point for many schools, groups and organisations to re-examine ideas about slavery and how we teach about this issue in a current global context.  Much of this activity has led to the production of new material [printed and on-line] to support teachers in their role. 


Using local archives to explore issues of slavery

Marcus Belben shares experiences of a project ‘A Shared History, a Shared Future’ which aims to explore issues of slavery in the last 200 years with schools, youth and community groups in Birmingham.  This project illustrates the potential for Archive sources to be used as a stimulus to young people’s learning.


Regional Governors’ Seminar for Sustainable Schools

This strategic event for School Governors and Governors’ support services took place at The Government Office for the West Midlands on 30th October 2007.

It introduced the Sustainable Schools Governors Toolkit from DCSF, and provided an opportunity for colleagues from Local Authorities to share ideas about how School Governors can support their schools around this agenda.


Thinking through making: Art and sustainable development

In late 2004, a group of teachers, educators and arts workers came together to discuss the ideas in that article, forming what came to be called the 'Arts Think Group'. This article shares some thoughts from that group.

Initial group discussions occupied the overlap between Sustainable Development, Education and Art.  Thinking revolved around what art and culture can contribute to personal, social and environmental wellbeing, locally and globally …  and how this might translate into educational practice. 


Quality global learning ~ meeting the needs of learners
